What is a Diuretic? A lot of medical conditions are treated with diuretics. But primarily, diuretics are prescribedwhat-is-a-diuretic to people with hypertension. It is also used in treated congestive heart failure. Since the heart cannot effectively pump blood throughout the body, there is an imbalance in the distribution of fluid. When this is not treated, this will eventually lead to edema, or fluid build-up.

So, what is a diuretic? Also known as water pills, diuretics help the kidney get rid of the excess sodium and water through the urine. As the sodium is expelled from the body, it takes water with it which causes a decrease the amount of fluid that flows in your arteries and blood vessels. The decrease in fluid is also associated with a lowering of the blood pressure.

Types of Diuretics

When your doctor prescribes you with diuretics, you will usually encounter terms such as thiazide, loop, and potassium-sparing. These are the different types that can help answer the question “what is a diuretic?”

Thiazide is the most common diuretic that is prescribed by the doctors. It helps in decreasing the fluid in your blood therefore causing your blood vessels to loosen up.

Loop diuretics usually the ones that are prescribed to patients suffering from heart failure.

Potassium-sparing is a type of diuretic that helps you lose the excess fluid in your body and at the same time prevents you from losing potassium – an essential mineral needed by the body to maintain the normal functioning of organs, especially the heart.

Each type has a different use, side effects, and precautions depending on the person’s condition. However, there are also natural products that also act as a diuretic and may be helpful to you.

5 Natural Diuretics

Early studies have shown that some natural products have an important diuretic property.

1. Horsetail Extract

A study conducted in 2014 had shown that horsetail extract had the same level of diuretic effectiveness as prescription medicine. It has also showed that it had fewer side effects.

3. Parsley

A study in 2002 has also claimed that parsley doesn’t only help as a food garnish but it also benefits the body by acting as a diuretic. Most recent studies have also further confirmed this claim.

4. Herbs

Herbs are commonly used as supplements. It benefits the body in many ways including flushing out excess sodium and fluid in the blood. Such herbs include: dandelion, hawthorne, and ginger.

5. Lemon

We’ve all seen a lot of people put a lemon on their water. Lemon is a fantastic natural diuretic alternative. Not only that, it also helps the body flush out dangerous toxins.
