Eye Health. The eyes are the windows to the soul. However, there’s no denying of the fact that as we grow older, our eyesight also grows older with us. Even teenagers nowadays experience poor eyesight which may be due to the increased eye-healthexposure to blue light in smartphones and laptops. And sometimes, the gradual decline in eyesight may be a result of genes which we know is really unavoidable.

Recent estimates state that more than 20 million Americans suffer from some kind of eye disease or serious loss of vision. Though certain circumstances may be difficult to prevent, there are some things we can do to reduce the chance of developing eye diseases or vision loss:

1. Wear Protective Sunglasses

The best way to protect your eyes from the damaging effect of the UV rays from the sunlight is by wearing protective sunglasses that has a UV protection. By blocking the UV rays, it can slow the development of cataracts in aging people. It also protects the skin of the eyes by reducing the chances of developing wrinkles and skin cancer.

2. Eat Well

We have known since we were kids that carrots are good for the eyes. In fact, our parents might have repeatedly told us that all orange vegetables can help in making the keeping our eyes in its optimal health. However, beautifying the eyes isn’t only limited to these vegetables. In fact, certain green vegetables can also improve Eye Health. These include spinach, broccoli, and kale. Salmon, tuna, and other fishes are also great for the eyesight since it’s rich in the essential fatty acid omega-3.

3. Take a Break From Staring at a Computer Screen

eye-healthStaring at the computer screen for too long may cause eye strain. It could also cause dry eyes and headaches. In order to combat this, a 20-20 technique was developed. This is how it works. Look away from your computer screen or whatever work you’re doing every 20 minutes and stare at something from 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

4. Stop Smoking

Smoking could increase your chance of developing cataracts at an earlier age than usual. It could also cause optic nerve damage as well as macular degeneration.

5. Do Regular Eye Check-ups

Getting regular eye check-ups can help you maintain a good eye health. It is also helpful in the early detection diseases that have started developing in your eyes so that it can be treated while it’s still early.
