Cortisol is one of the hormone produced by the adrenal glands. High levels of cortisol in the morning provides us the energy for the day and at its lowest in the evening when we sleep. Whenever your cortisol levels are imbalanced, you will experience adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue then causes insomnia.
Insomnia can be sleep onset insomnia and sleep maintenance insomnia. Having adrenal fatigue is the reason why you have difficulty in falling asleep and staying asleep. There is an imbalance of your circadian rhythm which also means a lack of deep sleep.
Sleep onset insomnia (SOI) is caused by an imbalance of the autonomic system that results in difficulty falling asleep when you should be able to which is usually around 9 to 10 in the evening.
Sleep maintenance insomnia (SMI) is manifested when you wake up repeatedly during the night. You can’t go back to sleep even when you wake up too early in the morning. This type is usually caused by metabolic or neuroendocrine dysfunction.
-Don’t drink caffeine or alcohol later in the evening. To avoid excessive stress
-Set up bedtime rituals. Stick to a schedule of waking up and sleeping at the same time everyday to help your body’s cycle.
-Don’t check the time when you wake up at night.
-Do soothing activities like yoga, breathing or meditation.
-Sleep in a dark room that is cool and quiet. This will produce the sleep-regulating hormone or melatonin.
-Remove electrical appliances such as night-lights and alarms to lessen emissions that can alter sleep pattern.
-Turn off computer, tv, loud music and other devices that stimulate adrenaline rush.
-Avoid doing strenuous activities like aerobics stop overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system.
The stress hormones from the adrenal glands suppress melatonin resulting to inhibition of deep sleep. Both high and low levels of cortisol can cause insomnia. It is noted that fixing stress hormone problem or Adrenal Fatigue will eventually fix insomnia.
There are many supplements that may regulate adrenal gland and suppress sleeplessness. But it is also advantageous if we eat healthy and exercise regularly to reduce insomnia and adrenal fatigue. To help getting deep and natural sleep and to achieve the benefits of a true sleep is by trying to heal Adrenal Fatigue and balance the hormones of the adrenal glands.
